Disaster Refuge Centers
In the event of earthquakes or natural disasters, schools and community centers (kominkan) serve as refuge centers. Be sure to find out where your nearest refuge center is for disaster preparedness.
Emergency radio broadcasts: provide information regarding refuge centers, local conditions and how to contact friends and family members. Use the following radio stations: NHK (AM594kHz, AM693kHz, FM82.5MHz) : the Public Broadcast Station (AM693kHz) provides information in English; FM Gunma (86.5MHz), FM Kiryu (77.7MHz).
Disaster Telephone Numbers: dial 171. Serves as a voice messaging center for disaster areas. Instructions in Japanese only. Users can record or receive messages. Can also be accessed from cell phones.
Foreign Residents Consultation Desk
Consultation for foreigners regarding residence in Kiryu. Pamphlets and maps available. Information regarding items of interest to foreigners mailed free of charge. Interested parties should contact the KIEA office.
Consultation Desk hours: 8:30 am to 5:15 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding holidays)
Location: Kiryu International Exchange Asso. Office, 2nd floor, Kiryu City Hall
Languages spoken: English, Japanese daily. Spanish consultation available on Wednesday only 11am to 3 pm. Interpretation available through the Gunma Tourism International Asso. Office include English, Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese. Phone: 027:243-7271.
Heath Insurance
Those living in Japan for 1 year or longer should be covered by either the National Health Insurance program or health insurance provided by your employer. Those covered receive a health insurance certificate which reduces medical costs to 30%. Applications for the National Health Insurance program can be made at the Alien Registration Counter of Kiryu City Hall.
Japanese Language Adventure Courses
4 Japanese courses for foreigners focusing on conversational skills. Courses run for 10 wks and repeated 3 times/yr. Text (\2,500) covers all 4 courses. Courses may be repeated & are free of charge (except text).
Calendar: 1st session: May - July; 2nd session: Sept. - Nov.; 3rd session: Jan. - Mar.
Time and Day: 10:30 am - 12 pm, Saturdays

Courses: Levels A, B, C, D
Weekday Off-Hours Emergency Medical Service
The following is an emergency medical service for off-hours on weekdays only. Not for serious cases which may involve hospitalization. For holiday medical service, see the KIEA website. Map provided (PC version only).
Examination days: Monday - Saturday (excluding holidays)
Hours: 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Service provided: Internal medicine, pediatrics
Location: Kiryu Medical Center (47-2501)
Holiday Dental Emergency Service
For dental emergencies on weekends and holidays. Follow-up care will take place at the servicing dentist&-43;s office during regular working hours. Map can be found on the KIEA website (PC version only).
Examination days: Sundays and holidays
Hours: 10 am - 3 pm
