This temple has been designated a Kiryu archeological site. During the reign of the first Kiryu dynasty, Lord Kiryu Rokuro made this site his residence
.
It is well worth viewing the 12 Guardian Generals flanking the main altar. These 12 warrior-like deities serve as protectors of the four directional coordinates - north, south, east and west, warding off the forces of evil.

Later, Lord Kiryu Kunitsune constructed a new castle on the summit of Mt. Hishaku, he moved his residence to the castle, leaving the temple and his former residence behind as a lower level dwelling.

It has been conjectured that the area around the Umebara Yakushi-Do, called "machi-ya" was the focal point of commerce for the original setting of Kiryu. Archelogical excavations at this site have uncovered various artifacts attesting to the existence of this small town.

The earth bank around the perimeter of Umebara Yakushi-Do is as it was at the time of construction, about 800 years ago, a trace of bygone days.
Yakushi is the Buddha of Healing, one of the Nyorai. This type of Buddha is generally shown in plain monk's raiment, without decoration.
