Introduction
Kiryu is probably the best kept secret on the Kanto Plain. Much is known about its historical textile manufacturing, however, Kiryu is also surrounded by a variety of flora and fauna, much of which is becoming increasingly rare.
Much has been done, and continues to be done, to protect the natural environment of the city. Large areas have been set aside as preserves, while other areas are undergoing reforestation projects which aim to restore the traditional woodland growth.
The city is surrounded by hiking trails along which the hiker can observe
much of the beauty of the area's flowers, trees, birds and fish. The rivers
are crystal clear and serve as hosts to a variety of fish and other aquatic
animals which can only live in very pure streams.
Walking along the trails which follow the course of the many brooks and
rivulets which flow into the Kiryu and Watarase rivers, you can hear the
echo of ages long past when Kiryu was once submerged under an ocean and
volcanoes spewed forth the many rocks and boulders which abound in the
riverbeds and form the mountains surrounding the city.
The Kiryu International Exchange Association hopes the reader will use this nature guide and its accompanying maps to explore the wonderful environment of the city. While doing so, please respect the pristine nature of our forests and rivers by not polluting or damaging the areas you visit.
Happy trekking!
