In the consecutive years of 1947 and 1948, the Kiryu area was devastated twice by typhoons of horrific proportions. The Kiryu Motorboat Racecourse was constructed in 1956 as a way of raising funds to rebuild the city and surrounding towns and villages.

The Kiryu Racecourse is the 25th motorboat racecourse to be built in Japan and is the northernmost racecourse in the country.

Special characteristics of the racecourse include its lovly green setting, its playground for children and other leisure facilities for families.

Approximately 2 million fans a year visit the racecourse. Proceeds from the racecourse are used to support regional education, welfare and construction projects.
