The annual Daruma Fair takes place on the third Sunday of January at Fumonji Temple in Hishi-machi, Kiryu. This fair was first held in Kiryu in 1964. The "Daruma" figure is said to bring good fortune, commercial success, household safety and protection from dangers, and is sold at the many stalls along the streets in the vicinity of and entrance to the temple.
It is traditional to purchase a Daruma figure and then to color in one eye while making a wish. When the wish is fulfilled, the other eye is filled in. Daruma figures from the previous year can also be brought back on this day to be burned at the temple.
In addition, a variety of festival foods and other goods are sold as well. Fumonji Temple was first established in 1575 when Yura Narishige was the local lord of the area.
