Azuma Park is a charming "green zone" on the northwest side of Kiryu City, between the slopes of Azuma mountain. It is a popular site for flower viewing. Within the park there is an arboreum for tropical plants, more than 5000 azalea bushes, some 6,000 Japanese irises, over 1,000 cherry trees and an amazing 30,000 tulips. In addition, there are many forms of shrubery which bloom throughout the year.
Near the center of the park there is a large pond which is most beautiful when the water lilies and lotuses are in bloom. Water, which rushes down the mountainside into the pond, also supplies the water necessary for the irises which bloom during the month of June.
Azuma is well-known not only for its beautiful cherry trees, but also for the huge collection of tulips which bloom in spring. The park hosts a tulip festival during this period and people come from all over the Kanto area to see the spectacular display of color. Later, during the rainy season, the park hosts an Iris festival. During this time, the iris paddies are filled with the romantic hues of purple, violet, and fuchsia as the irises come into bloom.
In addition to its many flowers, the park is a superb location for bird watching. The quiet natural setting of the park has made it a preferred loction for respite and relaxation among the local citizenry.
There are many paths through the woods surrounding the park leading off into the mountains for pleasurable hiking tours. In addition, there is a tea house overlooking the pond. Public tea ceremonies take place there every month on the third Sunday.
